City of San José Green Vision

The City of San José (City) has long been a leader in green policies and environmentally-friendly programs. City Council adoption of San José’s Green Vision in October 2007 aligned and strengthened the City’s focus on energy, with specific and aggressive goals related to the use of energy, implementation of renewable technologies and the creation of green collar workforce opportunities:

Goal 1: Create 25,000 Clean Tech jobs.
Goal 2: Reduce per capita energy use by 50%.
Goal 3: Receive 100% of our electrical power from clean renewable sources.
Goal 4: Build or retrofit 50 million square feet of green buildings.

Among the Green Vision’s ten goals, one of the more ambitious is ensuring that 100% of the City’s electricity needs are met by renewable energy sources by 2022. San José is working to develop programs for the community that will remove barriers to solar adoption and enable residents and businesses to contribute to achieving the City’s Green Vision goals.

Solar America San José

In 2008, the City of San José was designated as one of 25 Solar America Cities in the United States by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in recognition of its commitment to accelerate the adoption of solar energy technologies. In 2009, San José also received the Solar Market Transformation Special Project grant from DOE for its commitment of increasing awareness on the viability of solar, providing clean energy financing strategies to property owners and developing green collar workforce opportunities.
